Nigeria’s own Tiwa Savage has been named the Best African Act at the 2018 MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMA).
The 38-year-old was honoured at a ceremony held at the Bilbao Exhibition Center, Bilbao, Spain on Sunday night.
She bested compatriot Davido, Nyashinski (Kenya), Fally Ipupa (Congo), Distruction Boyz (South Africa) and Shekinah (South Africa).
Tiwa is the first African female artiste to win the award that has been won by in the past by the likes of 2face, D’banj, Wizkid and Davido.
“African Woman, this is for US
“I’ve been through a lot but I’ve kept my head up and weathered the storm because I know some little girl somewhere is dreaming like I did,” she wrote in an Instagram post shortly after the award presentation.
Another Nigerian, Hauwa Ojeifo, won in the first edition of MTV EMA Generation Change Award category.
The 26-year-old, however, missed the ceremony because she could not secure a Schengen Visa from the Spanish embassy in Nigeria to embark on the trip.
